Don't Try to Breathe on the Left Side and Count Strokes at the Same Time

OK - I better not ever have to do accounting while underwater - I can't swim and count at the same time. (Plus, I was making it extra hard because I was trying to breathe on the left side...I am not an ambidextrous breather.) I ended up with a nose full of water while trying to count my strokes during a "freestyle DPS" set (distance per set). It was a chilly night for swimming - the kind of temperature where you just want to stay IN the water and not expose your skin to the cold air!

ok - when I first read this I was totally cracking up! It seems near impossible to count under water!

You are so funny. I can't count either, even it's just laps. Who am I kidding, I can't even count on land! I think you're right, if I had to count strokes I'd just drown!

As far as breathing on your non-dominant side, there are two things that I recommend to other people that seem to help a little:

1. Make sure that while you're swimming freestyle you keep your face looking at the bottom of the pool. If you start to look up towards the wall you force your feet to sink and it screws up all your body mechanics.
2. Pretend like there's a rod attaching your shoulder to your chin. When your shoulder rotates back to pull your elbow out of the water, it also pulls your chin up and face comes up to breathe.

Happy swimming :)
